How Sand and Gravel Improve Drainage
A rockier base such as gravel can help accumulating water drain more effectively than soil or mulch—this is because gravel is less absorptive. When added with sand as a foundation for areas around your lawn and garden, you can build a system that drains water away from your house and cuts down on possible moisture problems or damage.

Mason Sand
Also called pool sand or play sand. Fairly fine textured with no pebbles or stones. For use under pool liners, in sandboxes or volleyball pits, under paving stones or bricks, or for use in mixing concrete.
Torpedo Sand
Torpedo sand provides exceptional drainage with very small chips in the slightly rougher sand.
Pea Gravel
Washed pea gravel 3/8" stone has some naturally round stone along with crushed pieces. For use in drain tile, play sets, etc.
Washed #1 Stone
3/4" washed #1 stone has some naturally round stone. Use for drainage, behind retaining walls, under concrete floors and around foundation walls.
Washed #2 Stone
2" washed #2 stone is mostly round stone about 1 1/2" in size. Provides exceptional drainage because of the large voids between the rocks. Commonly used in high water volume areas.
3/8" Crushed Limestone Chips
Commonly called sewer chips and used to bed pipes, this is a clean, small, white limestone chip.
3/4" Crushed Limestone
Most commonly used behind block landscape walls as the jagged crushed shape will help hold the geo-grid fabric giving the wall greater support.
3/4" Traffic Bond
This is good stone for a driveway base. It has crushed limestone from ¾” down to dust. This powder helps hold the stones together.
